Shrink Down and See the Downsizing Trailer

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for the sci-fi comedy Downsizing.

The film also stars Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Rolf Lassgård, Jason Sudeikis, Laura Dern and Neil Patrick Harris.

The trailer presents "downsizing" as a Lilliputian Utopia, but there also come major risks, such as inclement weather, hungry animals and the occasional oversized shoe. "We live like kings". With the promise of a better life in a miniaturised world, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to leave their lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community.

Payne, meanwhile, works off a script he co-wrote with Jim Taylor. "When Jim [Taylor] and I made a decision to do something with the idea, we saw it in more political terms", he explained. I've very much enjoyed all of Alexander Payne's past films, but it's hard to get a grasp on the film's tone from the trailer.

The film doesn't yet have a United Kingdom release date, but it's set to land in U.S. cinemas three days before Christmas. "Humans are involved in politics, so we thought this story was an interesting prism through which to view our times".

"Downsizing" recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a mostly positive reception and, in quite a few cases, ecstatic praise.

Downsizing is set for release on December 22.
