Hales's exit was the start of a slump that saw England lose three wickets for four runs as 64 for one soon became 68 for four.

Almost 13,000 spectators at Riverside Ground will miss their local hero Stokes in action and also his battle with West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite that was one of the defining moment in the 2016 World T20 final at Eden Gardens.

To some in Durham it was yet another slap in the face from the England and Wales Cricket Board, who took the unprecedented step of relegating the side from the First Division of the County Championship in October and then hit them with a massive 48-point penalty for this season in return for a £3.8 million (4.3 million euros) bail-out that stopped the club going out of business in May previous year.

Morgan, out for two on Saturday, has managed just 12 runs in his last seven innings for Middlesex, Barbados Tridents and England.

"Losing the game was losing three wickets in that period", said Morgan.

The powerful Jamaica left-hander, who did not feature in West Indies' recent 2-1 Test series loss in England, hit three fours and four sixes in just 21 balls after England captain Eoin Morgan sent the tourists into bat.

The Riverside, which has hosted 26 global fixtures since being opened in 1995, was recently barred from hosting Test matches following a financial bail-out from the European Central Bank that also resulted in the club losing its first-division status.

Gayle's first match of the West Indies' tour of England saw the big-hitting opener make a typically rapid 40 before he was run out at Chester-le-Street.

And the 31-year-old insists the six upcoming matches against West Indies will provide a stern challenge.

The third over saw Gayle smash left-arm paceman Willey for two successive sixes - a pull followed by a straight drive.

The hosts' bowlers had pegged West Indies back from 106-1 after 10 overs with Adil Rashid taking 3-25.

We shall anyhow see the return of Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard in the West Indies' national side.

The one-day global series starts on Tuesday.

"It's something I can't get away from.they even have us playing at his (Stokes's) home ground", said Brathwaite on Friday.
