White House Denies Claim Trump Plans to Shift on Paris Climate Accord

Next steps for Paris agreement on tap for international meeting in Montreal

Mr. Trump announced his decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement to much fanfare in June, fulfilling one of his campaign promises.

The White House immediately disavowed on Saturday a Wall Street Journal report suggesting the Trump administration is reversing its stated intention of abandoning the Paris climate accord.

"There has been no change in the United States' position on the Paris agreement", White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement.

In June, a newly elected Trump publicly rejected the deal, which he called "unfair at the highest level to the United States".

According to The Hill, the White House has denied the reports that it is reconsidering withdrawing from the Paris climate deal.

But the White House said there's been no change on the US position on the global pact.

"It's truly said to see all the fairweather friends turning on Trump", Baked Alaska said on Twitter.

"We should take actions now", Xie said, "to ensure that we can realize the goals that we have set".

The announcement was reportedly made by senior White House adviser Everett Eissenstat during a meeting of more than 30 global ministers Saturday in Montreal.

Any move to re-enter the deal, even under more favorable terms, could serve to infuriate Trump's base, coming after Trump caved to Democrats on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and pushed for Congress to enshrine the order he promised to revoke into law.

Washington has said it would participate in United Nations climate change meetings during the withdrawal process, which is expected to take at least three years.
