After Child Was Struck By Foul Ball, Rob Manfred Says MLB to 'Redouble' Netting Efforts

Pressure came from Phillies players a year ago, after Freddy Galvis struck a young girl in the face with a foul ball. However, from the fifth inning on, baseball was the least of anyone's worries.

Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier fouled a ball down the left field line into the stands, striking a young fan.

But what happened this week to the toddler in NY is not uncommon. The players, the umpires, the fans and it's disturbing when it happens.

An incredibly scary moment took place at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

We're not going to show you the actual moment when the ball hit the child, but here are two reaction shots that really tell the story.

"It was a cutting line drive at 105 miles per hour", he said. @gehrig38 Let's all pray! He's nearly in tears.

Matt Holliday was seen wiping away tears as the girl received medical attention.

"Hope everything is alright with the little girl that got hit with the foul ball", tweeted shortstop Didi Gregarious.

The girl was taken to the game by her grandparents, who said she's doing okay.

In 1970, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Mota struck 14-year-old Alan Fish in the temple with a foul ball.

But the players on the field were clearly shaken by the incident.

According to multiple fan reports, the girl was bleeding and was immediately carried up the stairs by her grandfather, a season ticket holder. However, her father spoke briefly with reporters at the hospital. When asked whether she would need surgery, the girl's father, who declined to give his name, said: "It's too early to tell". The Yankees said in July that they are "seriously exploring" extending the netting for 2018. "I don't care about the view of a fan, it's all about safety", Dozier said.

"I mean it's a great thrill, it's fun to catch a foul ball or a bat, but it is very unsafe", said Francisco Leon who is both a parent and a baseball coach.

Frazier and teammate CC Sabathia said their families always sit behind netting or screens. "It's just something that I wish never happened". I realize that extended netting means there are more people looking through the nets at the game instead of having a "clear" view. "I have two kids under 3 years old and I just hope she's all right". I know - Target Field being the closest to home plate, so we put up a little rule that a certain amount of distance you gotta have one.

In the wake of a grim 2015 accident in which a woman at Boston's Fenway Park was struck in the head by a flying piece of a broken bat, Major League Baseball issued recommendations - but not requirements - for clubs to install protective netting.

The Cincinnati Reds were the latest team to announce their protective nettings would expand over both dugouts.
