Airtel to launch 4G smartphone at Rs 1399 by Diwali

Airtel's 4G smartphone is bundled with a monthly pack of Rs 169, which offers data and call benefits.

This effective price tag, which puts the phone at Rs 200 less than the JioPhone, is a direct attack on the smart feature phone which was announced at Reliance Industries' 40th AGM on July 21 by Mukesh Ambani. The Rs 169 recharge plan, which offers information and calling benefits, is discretionary.

The buyer will have to make a down payment of 2,899 rupees for the smartphone, from which 500 rupees would be refunded after 18 months and the remaining 1,000 rupees after three years. But you need to do 36 continuous monthly recharges of Rs. 169 for keep using this offer. Offering the 4G smartphone gadget at "the cost of a feature phone", telecom giant Airtel stated the Android-based gadget will accompany a "full touchscreen experience, double SIM openings and access to all prevalent applications such as YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook".

Further, the smartphone will be available at leading mobile stores across the country. It comes with a 4-inch display and is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor that's paired with 1 GB RAM. It ships with a 1400 mAh battery which Karbonn claims can offer standby time of 200 hours and talk-time of up to 4 hours.

In the camera department, there is a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 0.3-megapixel front camera.

The feature phone will have 4G network connectivity options. A 1400mAh battery is on board for battery needs.

It has a built-in storage memory of 8 GB, which can be supplemented by a 32 GB micro-SD card. This gets you Cashback of Rs. 500. The JioPhone is locked to Reliance's ecosystem, which means you rely on Jio apps such as JioTV and JioVoice and so on.

However, much like the JioPhone's effective price tag of Rs 0, this effective Rs 1,399 price of the Karbonn smartphone is at best slightly misleading. Reliance Jio has already launched its 4G feature phone. It supports 2G, 3G & 4G as well as Airtel VoLTE. We are delighted to partner with Karbonn to remove barriers to smartphone adoption and enable millions of Indians to leapfrog to a full touchscreen smartphone experience.

Airtel has explained that initiative will bring "highly affordable bundled 4G smartphone options to the market and fulfil the digital aspirations of millions of Indians".

Karbonn A 40 runs on Android Nougat 7.0 and supports 22 languages including various regional languages. However, to claim the cash refund benefit, recharges worth Rs3,000 must be done within the first 18 months to claim the first refund instalment of Rs500 and recharges worth another Rs3,000 over the next 18 months to claim the second refund instalment of Rs1,000.
