Amazon's New Kindle Oasis Syncs Audible With Kindle And Safely Works In The Bath

The new Kindle Oasis is available to pre-order starting today with a release date of 31 October and a price of £229 - so unlike most new products it's actually cheaper.

The newest member of the Kindle family is the first to come with water resistance, as we mentioned above.

Pricing: $249.99 for the 8GB and $279.99 for the 32GB.

Furthermore, the original Oasis had a built-in battery that promised around two weeks of power, but it also shipped with a separate battery cover that connected to the Oasis via a little port on the rear to give it another seven weeks. And it just got better, with a larger screen and waterproofing for bath-time reading.

Weighing in at 194 grams and 3.4mm thick, the refreshed Kindle Oasis sports a 7-inch display - one inch larger than its predecessor.

It's IPX8-rated, meaning it can survive being held under two metres of fresh water for up to 60 minutes.

Plus, the Kindle Oasis is also waterproof for the very first time.

The new Kindle Oasis costs £230 ($250) and has 8 GB of storage while the previous version of Kindle Oasis cost £270 ($290) and had 4GB. The case also doesn't have a battery in it anymore. That's double the base storage of previous Kindles, which Amazon says is to accommodate the storage of audio books. The optional flip covers might have lost their battery-boosting abilities as a result, but a month and a half should be enough for just about anyone.

"Its thin, light and waterproof design allows readers to stay engaged in the author's world in even more places than ever before". But Amazon has made a point of saying that it managed to fit in a bigger battery, while keeping the tapered side of the device at 3.4 millimeters. (Amazon has tried its hand at both, finding more success with Fire-branded tablets than the discontinued Fire phone). You'll need Bluetooth headphones or speakers - Amazon won't be including any in the box - while if you pair the new Kindle Oasis with your car's Bluetooth you'll be able to control playback and such with the vehicle's buttons.

If you're also planning to use the Oasis for your audiobooks, it's likely you'll want the larger 32GB version to ensure you have enough room for all of your titles. To easily download ebooks you'll have to buy them from Amazon's own store, but that does mean you have access to a huge ebook store and can get lots of benefits if you're a Prime subscriber.

Amazon has been selling Kindles for 10 years now, but "waterproof" never appeared on its list of incremental technological advancements - until now.

I only saw the new Oasis during the day, so will have to wait for a full review to see if it can lower the lights enough for night-time reading.

You get a choice of new covers too, US$44.99 for the fabric ones and $59.99 for the leather ones.
