American hostage Caitlan Coleman, family rescued in Pakistan after years of captivity

Pakistan secures freedom of Western family kidnapped in Afghanistan

The announcement of the release comes a month after President Trump announced a new strategy to deal with Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying the Taliban and other militant groups would no longer find safe haven in Pakistan.

The couple set off in the summer 2012 for a journey that took them to Russian Federation, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then to Afghanistan. The hostages were recovered "through an intelligence-based operation by Pakistani troops".

The Pakistani statement said the family had been held in Afghanistan but that "U.S. intelligence agencies has been tracking them" and shared that they had crossed the border on Wednesday. "The world is starting to respect us again, believe me", Trump said appearing to reference Pakistan and that country's role in bringing about the the recovery of the four hostages. Coleman was pregnant at the time, and a video released by the Taliban in December showed their two sons born while they were hostages.

ABC News reports that Caitlan Coleman, 31, and her husband Joshua Boyle, 34, were freed from Taliban captivity and then secured in an exchange between Pakistani military and USA commandos late Wednesday.

A US national security official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing operation, commended Pakistan for their assistance.

After being held captive by the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network since 2012, American Caitlin Coleman and her family have finally been released, the White House announced.

The Pakistani military confirmed the news in a statement.

The family was being held by the Haqqani network.

The U.S. has long criticized Pakistan for failing to aggressively go after the Haqqanis, who have been behind many attacks against U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan.

A video released by the Taliban a year ago had showed the family, including two young boys. Unlike the Islamic State group, it does not typically execute Western hostages, preferring to ransom them for cash. US officials call the group a terrorist organization and have targeted its leaders with drone strikes.

The Taliban are also believed to be holding American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weekes, both professors at the American University of Afghanistan, who were dragged from their vehicles in Kabul by gunmen in August a year ago. They had started their trip in Russian Federation, then traveled to Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, before finally ending up in Afghanistan.

Today, Pakistan Army conducted a rescue operation and recovered these five foreigners from within the country.
