After nearly two years of his controversial tenure, Mahabharat actor Gajendra Chauhan is set to be replaced as FTII chairman by veteran actor Anupam Kher.

Kher had earlier said, "I personally feel that FTII represents a certain art form... it does certainly need a person having a great body of work which means he is supposed to know world cinema, he is supposed to know the present state of cinema like editing. I will perform my duties to the best of my abilities.", Kher tweeted.

Now, two years later as Kher succeeds Chauhan there is a general feeling that the memories of what was arguably one of the worst appointments ever in the history of FTII would soon be a thing of the past.

Kher has also been part of acclaimed worldwide films such as the 2002 Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, and the 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook.

Students had opposed his appointment as FTII chairman, claiming that he was not fit for the job and got the position for being a BJP leader.

Apart from films, Kher has appeared in a number of plays, and television shows.

Kher's breakthrough film was Mahesh Bhatt's Saaransh (1984) where the then 28-year old actor played a middle-aged retired Maharashtrian man coming to terms with the death of his son in a mugging incident in NY.

"I would like to thank the government and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry", she said. However, when small-time actor Gajendra Chauhan had been appointed as the Chairman of an institute, thousands of students had started the protest against the Chairman.

The appointment of Anupam Kher is, however, posing several questions, while the students are taking his appointment as a joke.

The BJP was under intense pressure from all quarters to remove Gajendra Chauhan but the actor refused to bow down to pressure and the party avoided any evasive action. Since its inception in 1960, the institute has become India's premier film and television institute, with its alumni becoming technicians, actors and directors in the film and television industry.

Visibly unhappy with some people wrongly reporting that Chauhan has been replaced by Kher, he also took to twitter and wrote, "I hv not been axed".
