Apple partners LG for foldable iPhone

While the authenticity of the report can not be guaranteed at this time, Apple's design guru Jony Ive did however mention is a recent interview that Apple started working on the bezel-less iPhone X design 5 years ahead of its unveiling in September. To be more precise, Apple has agreed to work with LG Display, an arm of LG, on bendable OLED screens.

However, Apple and LG's partnership may not be seeing fruit until 2020, giving Samsung quite a large window to go one-up on its rival. LG reportedly completed its own foldable OLED panel prototype two to three years ago and has been upgrading the durability and the yield rate. That, and the fact that Apple probably won't want to launch one until the tech has been perfected. The move is also interesting because Samsung is the sole supplier of OLED panels for this year's iPhone X. Google is doing the same thing, having reportedly invested hundreds of millions of cash in LG as well. The report adds LG Innotek is also working on developing flexible printed circuit board or RFPCB for the foldable iPhones. On the other hand, Samsung is already ahead in the foldable phone race.

It could also be because Apple is cautious about what they share with Samsung, according to Korean news site The Investor. The facial recognition software on the iPhone X is not a feature we've never heard of before, however, it could be the best one available on the market. LG, meanwhile, has reportedly completed its own foldable OLED panel prototype years ago, and is now working to increase durability and the yield rate of the same.

Samsung now supplies all of the OLED panels for this year's iPhone X, and the Korean electronics giant has reportedly been tapped to be the sole OLED supplier for next year's iPhone models too.

LG's first OLED panels will be used in devices for its own LG Electronics division and a few Chinese handset makers. In July, it was said that Apple is ready to infuse LG with $2.6 billion for a new OLED plant.
