Aston Martin DB11 Volante Drops the Top in Time for Spring

Convertible Astons - badged Volantes since the mid '60s - have traditionally accounted for half of all sales and the new DB11 Volante announced today (13 October) is expected to be no different, especially in sunnier countries around the world where gran turismo motoring gets no more glamorous than when behind the wheel of an Aston with its top down.

Aston says the convertible DB11 can be personalised by drivers, thanks to the three roof colour options - red, black or grey - as well as seat veneer panels and other options.

Purists could be shocked to discover that this drop-top is propelled forward by a V8 rather than a velvety smooth V12, but the eight-cylinder 4-liter twin-turbocharged block in question comes courtesy of Mercedes-AMG. Torque is 513lb ft and the vehicle produces 255g/km CO2. If you're anxious that the soft top roof won't be as strong as a metal one, Aston Martin went to extreme lengths to test the rigidity of the DB11 Volante's roof mechanism. And its performance is great too-Aston quotes a 4.1-second 0-62 miles per hour time, and it'll hit 187 miles per hour flat out. It can be operated both from inside the cabin and remotely, from the key fob, and the automaker says that its new folding mechanism makes for a 20-percent larger trunk than the old DB9 Volante this vehicle replaces. Top speed is also identical for both models. Not that the British automaker has been keeping it a secret - Aston Martin showed off a prototype of the DB11 Volante over a year ago, with a launch date penned for spring 2018.

The DB11 Volante's roof is a totally new design with eight-layer fabric that promises excellent noise and weather isolation when it's in place. The new hood system has also led to a 20 per cent gain in boot volume compared to the outgoing DB9 Volante.

It was previewed in prototype form past year, but now it's here for real. "With the DB11 Volante we have maximized the advantages of the DB11's all-new bonded structure to underpin our new Volante with a structure that's 26kg lighter and 5% stiffer than its predecessor [the DB9 Volante]". The result is a truly magnificent auto.

Recommended Retail Price from £159,900 in the United Kingdom, €199,000 in Germany and $216,495 in U.S., first deliveries of the DB11 Volante are scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2018. From what we can see, Aston Martin has another stunner in its growing line-up.
