In recent years, OH reported 17 human West Nile Virus cases in 2016 including four deaths, 35 in 2015 including two deaths and 11 in 2014 including one death. And are monitored at the Wastewater Treatment Plant near Solvang.

MVMD said that West Nile virus cases are down from the same time in 2016.

The Mississippi State Department of Health is confirming three new cases of West Nile virus.

Testing throughout the state of California has shown that WNV is present in the bird populations of 37 counties and chicken populations in 16 counties.

According to the U.S. Centers for Decease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms.

However, in elderly people and those with suppressed immune systems the virus can be deadly.

Use a mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.

· Install or fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Residents are also urged to be diligent in ridding their properties of standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

County health officials urged the public to remain vigilant against mosquitoes until there's a mosquito-killing frost this year, and they urged horse owners to vaccinate their horses against EEE.
