The two countries finished level on 19 points, behind Group A winners France, but Sweden finished second on goal difference.

An own-goal by Swiss defender Johan Djourou before halftime and a goal by forward by Andre Silva early in the second half were enough to give Portugal its ninth straight victory since an opening 2-0 loss to the Swiss in Basel past year.

Ronaldo embarked on a slaloming run across the edge of the Switzerland box and there was fury when referee Cuneyt Cakir remained unmoved as he went to ground under increasingly desperate challenges.

Portugal were more aggressive after half-time, and on 57 minutes extended their advantage, a lovely move ending with Andre Silva sliding home Bernardo Silva's cross.

Ronaldo should have scored his 16th goal of the qualifying campaign when he was sent clear in the 78th minute but he over-elaborated as he tried to get around Yann Sommer and allowed the goalkeeper to claim the ball but the points were already safe.

As the first half wore on the game started to become more open and the away side were starting to break forward with a bit more urgency and commitment, but both teams were struggling to find any consistency in the final third.

The Swiss had led the group since beating Portugal 2-0 in Basel in their opening match in September previous year and gone on to win all nine matches before Tuesday's encounter in Lisbon, while Portugal had won their subsequent eight.

However, bad officiating wasn't going to stop Portgual's second goal which came after a succession of passes inside the Switzerland area was expertly finished at the back post by Andre Silva to make it 2-0.

"It will be a hard game, but if we are together, players and fans will be hard for the opponent".

Ronaldo, who was injured for the opening qualifying defeat in Basel, returned to the Portugal line-up after coming off the bench to notch the opening goal in a lacklustre 2-0 win in Andorra on Saturday.
