Kolkata back to normal, deep depression moves westwards

Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm, under influence of a low pressure over north Bay of Bengal, is likely to occur at northern and southern parts of the State within next 24 hours informed regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today.

A day after torrential rain battered the city, Kolkatans today heaved a sigh of relief as the weather relented, with a deep depression that had triggered the downpour moving towards the western part of West Bengal. The city recorded 18.4 mm rainfall on Monday.

Meteorological Department on South Bengal has issued warnings to people living in sea areas and fishermen and have been asked not to go to the sea.

According to railway officials, the suburban and long distance train services of both Eastern and South Eastern Railways were affected slightly in the morning due to the rains.

Strong wind speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour and gusting to 50 km per hour would prevail over the interior parts of Gangetic West Bengal, it added.

The incessant rain and squally winds affected life in Kolkata as traffic on several major thoroughfares was badly affected due to waterlogging and uprooted trees.

Many schools, which re-opened after Durga Puja vacations, were compelled to declare a holiday due to the unpleasant weather. Atleast twenty-six flights were diverted, reports said.

While the Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai flights were diverted to Delhi and Ranchi respectively, a flight from Port Blair was diverted to Agartala.

Flight services to and from the NSCBIA were disrupted because of the weather conditions. Official claim that if the situation persists then a few flights from Kolkata will have to be cancelled.

The continuous rain, which started late last night, not only affected flights but also resulted in waterlogging in and around the airport.
