DICE Address Concerns Over Star Wars Battlefront II's Loot Crate System

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 in-game currency 'Crystals' priced; Loot Crate contents detailed

There's been quite a backlash recently against loot crates and progression systems that encourage players to spend more cash. Honestly, aside from the idea of loot boxes being dropped entirely, I don't foresee much being done to help assuage any fears of the core game being diluted in favour of some quick and cheap trendy microtransactions.

Our own Sherif called it a 'pay to win' system, and a lot of people agree.

DICE has offered clarification on Star Wars: Battlefront 2's controversial loot crates and progression mechanics, telling players that "the complete system was not in the beta and will continue to be tuned over time".

EA and Dice's statement specifies that we didn't see the full version of the crates and progression system in the beta, and that they're still tweaking the systems.

"As a balance goal, we're working towards having the most powerful items in the game only earnable via in-game achievements", they wrote.

The last thing that EA clarified is that players will have to "earn the right" to be able to upgrade their Star Cards and or unlock "most weapons".

Players earn crates by completing challenges and other gameplay milestones, or by purchasing them with in-game credits or Crystals, our premium currency.

Crates will include a mix of of Star Cards, Outfits, Emotes or Victory Poses.

Star Card upgrades and unlocking weapons can be achieved with a high enough rank which means you need to play to get your hands on these. With enough stacks your preferred character can become nearly unstoppable, making it very much a pay-to-win system for those who decide to buy their way into higher tier cards.

Star Wars Battlefront II launches on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 17th in all regions. The developers are also considering making Strike Mode best out of three, nerfing the Specialists' Infiltration ability, buffing the First Order's Flametroopers, a new feature that rewards all players in a spawn wave, and other ways of incentivising team work.

Secondly, the most powerful items can only obtained by playing the game and will not be found in loot boxes.

The only major fault brought up frequently in regard to the beta test is that Star Wars: Battlefront II has a microtransaction cash shop with loot boxes that can severely give you an advantage over the opposition during battle.
