Beware of Health Issues with Halloween Costumes

Medical officials are sounding the alarm that head lice may become a disgusting nuisance for many children and adults who are trying on Halloween costumes.

Wondering what you're going to dress as this Halloween?

Halloween is usually filled with creepy crawlers, but health experts are warning that there may be real ones lurking inside your costume's mask this year. Doctors are seeing a jump in head lice, saying costume shopping is partly to blame. You never know the kind of bugs you may be exposing your little ones and yourselves to.

The store has just released an incredible variety of costumes for kids that you can grab for only $20!

Experts recommend not trying on any costumes, masks or wigs in the store. He adds that if a mask or costume doesn't look like it's clean or well-kept, don't risk it. "And a lot of people don't give much thought into the fact that several people could've tried it on before them", Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Cherie Sexton told the station.

Put your new costume into a tightly sealed bag for at least 48 hours before wearing it to kill off any lice that may be on it.

Another suggestion is to toss the costume in your dryer for 45 minutes, the heat will also kill lice.

She recommends the best way to avoid getting lice is to wear a swim or wig cap before trying on costumes.
