Dow Jones technical error spreads fake news story of Google acquiring Apple

Dow Jones Newswire Sends False Google-Apple Merger Story; DJ Calls It 'Technical Error'

"Please disregard the headlines that ran on Dow Jones Newswires between 9:34AM ET and 9:36AM ET", it said.

However, the incident certainly serves as a pointer to an automated world of the future under the aegis of AI (artificial intelligence) in which Google, Apple, Facebook and Dow Jones will be key players.

"Google to buy Apple for $9 billion", it read.

The brief story beneath the headline made it clear that something had gone awry at the news service, a trusted source for the trading and investment industries. The deal, which is expected to close tomorrow, gives each Google shareholder nine shares of Apple stock.

In the story, Dow Jones reported that Larry Page, incorrectly referred to as Google CEO, as he is now CEO of parent company Alphabet, spoke with Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs in 2010 before he passed away to finalize the deal. The fake report elaborated, falsely saying that Google employees responded to the news by saying, "Yay".

Apple now has a market value greater than $800 billion. However, it appears that either one of Dow Jones' employees hit the publish button for the Google-Apple story by mistake, or a system glitch did so.

That's not all. The fake news report also said that Google's staff would be forced to move into "Apple's fancy headquarters" at 1 Infinite Loop.

Dow Jones has since put out a statement saying that the freaky, now removed, headlines were the result of a "technical error". "All of those headlines are being removed from the wires", Severinghaus said in the statement. "We apologise for the error".
