Man Who Helped Rescue Alexandria Teen from Kidnappers Gives Back to the Family

As Melchert drove Jasmine to the authorities, she spotted a auto driven by one of the three men now charged in the case, leading to their arrests the same day she was found.

On Friday, the Alexandria Police Department presented Mr. Melchert with a $7,000 reward that had been offered for information leading to Ms. Block's return; $2,000 had come from Ms. Block's family and $5,000 from an anonymous donor.

He told her he needed help with a family situation, Richard Wyffels, the Alexandria police chief, said at a news conference.

For the next 29 days, Barker, along with Joshua Holby, 31, and Steven Powers, 20, allegedly physically and sexually assaulted her and threatened her with weapons, The Times reported.

"I could make out her face, and I went, 'Oh my gosh, this is the gal from Alexandria that's been gone for 29 days, '" Melchert said, according to The New York Times.

"Thank you, Earl", the department wrote.

Though Elchert had just retired a week earlier, he said that Block "deserved" the money and handed the check over to the teen.

"Today we witnessed an incredible example of kindness", the Alexandria Police Department posted on Facebook later, describing Melchert as "the man who made the call everyone was waiting for" on the day he spotted the girl.

'What no one expected was the kindness and generosity that came straight from Earl's heart today.

The teenager accompanied Mr Barker in his auto - and when they arrived at his home, he allegedly tied her up with zip ties.

"The reward money means absolutely nothing to me", said Melchert as he addressed Jasmine and her mother, Sarah.

It was that decision that would change the course of numerous lives - especially that of a 15-year-old Jasmine Block.

"You're a hero because of how you reacted", Wyffels said.

Mr Melchart told local media that "he did what I had to do". "Things are looking up". Barker and Powers were also charged with criminal sexual conduct. There's other things I can do to help people, volunteer. "It was out there so much that when Earl saw you, he knew who you were". Barker, who was a family acquaintance, then drove her to his home, restrained her with zip ties and along with two other men "repeatedly assaulted her" for weeks.

The three alleged kidnappers are under arrest and in custody, police say. She's probably the strongest person I have ever known'. "There's good people in this world still", Paige told The Voice of Alexandria.

"The family needs the money", he said. "To me, yeah, that's a lot of money, but they need it way worse than I do", Elchert said.
