Government waste strategy to 'make the United Kingdom a world leader'

UK Clean Growth Strategy Welcomed by ADBA – But Food Waste Collections Needed

UK Trade body, the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) has welcomed the Clean Growth Strategy published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The BEIS said carbon emissions in the United Kingdom have fallen and national income has risen faster and further than any other nation in the G7 since 1990.

Scottish Secretary David Mundell said: "This UK government investment is vital in realising the potential of less established renewable technologies, as well as providing Scottish jobs in the projects supported".

Energy Minister Richard Harrington has confirmed that up to £557 million will be made available for less established renewable electricity projects as part of the government's Clean Growth Strategy, to drive economic growth and clean up the energy system.

For the first time in a generation, the British government is leading the way on taking decisions on new nuclear, rolling out smart meters and investing in low carbon innovation.

United Kingdom climate change and industry minister Claire Perry said: "The impact of the Paris agreement and the unstoppable global shift towards low carbon technologies gives the United Kingdom an unparalleled opportunity". The world is moving from being powered by polluting fossil fuels to clean energy.

While the waste and resources industry, responsible for 15 per cent of United Kingdom carbon emissions, has grown increasingly frustrated at the repeated delay to the release of the government's 25-year environment plan, now put back until 2018, the Clean Growth Strategy at least provides some indication that the government is getting serious about preparing the United Kingdom for a low-carbon future and recognises the role of waste and resources in achieving that.

Bevan Jones, managing director of Sustainable Homes, said: "We also need to reduce the emissions created by heating our homes and businesses, which account for nearly a third of United Kingdom emissions".

Ambition for the United Kingdom to be zero avoidable waste economy by 2050.

The £2.5 billion of existing government spending includes up to £505 million from the BEIS's Energy Innovation Program, which aims to accelerate the commercialization of innovative clean energy technologies and progresses.

"We welcome the Clean Growth Strategy as a milestone in the United Kingdom working towards greater sustainability in new builds".
