But are people right to be anxious?

Ophelia will lose hurricane strength over the weekend but it is still expected to pack a punch when it makes landfall in the United Kingdom on Monday.

University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy says Ophelia is the 10th straight tropical storm to become a hurricane in an Atlantic season.

Hurricane Ophelia is predicted to hit Britain over the next few days.

Ophelia has been classed as a hurricane by the US National Hurricane Centre. At the time, models suggested Ophelia would meet land in Portugal and northern Spain. However, the NHC said it would be downgraded to a storm by then.

It will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987, which hit southern England overnight on October 15.

The storm caused damage estimated at £1billion and claimed 18 lives.

Spaghetti models also show Ophelia set to smash the United Kingdom as the storm heads closer, as it potentially could become a hurricane.

"At the moment it looks like it's going to track along the side of the west coast of Ireland and just brushes the edge of Scotland".

But he added: "It's definitely something that we are keeping an eye on, for the possibility of some disruptive weather early next week".

"Above-normal temperatures could continue into Monday before getting cooler from Tuesday".
