Amazon introduces waterproof 7-inch Kindle Oasis with Audible integration, metal body

The devices are available to pre-order on Amazon India, and will go on sale on November 15th.

Eric Saarnio, head of Amazon devices in the European Union said: "It has a 7in screen, an inch larger than any of our recent devices, and is also the highest resolution with 300ppi screen density, meaning we can fit around 30% more words on the screen per page, which means customers have to turn fewer pages". Whether you want to read in the bath, the swimming pool or even in the rain- you name it- Amazon's latest Kindle can withstand being plummeted into two meters of water for up to 60 minutes. The 8GB model is priced at Rs 21,999 while the 32GB model (WiFi + free 3G) is priced at Rs 28,999.

Amazon has four Kindle devices in their e-book lineup: the original Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage and the Oasis.

The big new feature for the Oasis is the integration of Amazon's Audible audiobook service, the first time for a Kindle device, which allows readers to seamlessly switch between audiobooks and ebooks, maintaining their position in the story if they own both formats of a particular book using the Whispersync for Voice service.

The new Oasis also supports audiobooks, allowing you to connect Bluetooth headphones or speakers to listen to your books wherever you are.

Amazon now offers a 4G model for the cellular variant in the United States, but in India the company will be offering a Wi-Fi + free 3G model. The e-reader is available in 8GB and 32GB storage variants.

The water-safe fabric covers can be purchased for Rs 2,999 and come in indigo, charcoal and sandstone colours. The company is partnering with Vodafone for 3G connectivity in India. Amazon has also launched a new cover for the Kindle Oasis, which also converts into a stand. The base model - without 4G capability and with 8 GB of storage - costs $250 (roughly Rs. 16,290).

In Australia, the new Kindle Oasis is available for pre-order online at JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks for AUD $389 from today.
