"He came to see the NRA as less of an advocate for gun owners and more of an advocate for the gun industry, refusing even the most basic, common sense gun safety reforms", said Zetts. "The American people deserve a vote on legislation that will curb gun violence, including reinstating an assault weapons ban and instituting new restrictions on gun trafficking".

In the wake of the Las Vegas massacre, Republicans on Capitol Hill have shown deep reluctance to consider any gun legislation, anxious that Democrats will use the shooting as a pretext to restrict law-abiding citizens' Second Amendment rights. 500 people have died in Chicago alone.

Fifty-eight people were killed and more than 500 others were wounded in the October 1 Las Vegas massacre, executed by a gunman with a cache of weapons and a device that converts a semi-automatic rifle into a full-automatic one. The Feinstein bill would "ban the sale, transfer, importation, manufacture or possession of bump stocks, trigger cranks and similar accessories that accelerate a semi-automatic rifle's rate of fire" and "makes clear that its intent is to target only those accessories that increase a semi-automatic rifle's rate of fire".

Legislators on both sides of the aisle have since voiced support for new regulations limiting the availability or legality of bump stocks.

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the shooter, Stephen Paddock, had 12 weapons in his hotel room fitted with "bump-fire stocks", devices that effectively turn semiautomatic rifles into machine guns.

Not so surprisingly, the NRA has stopped short of supporting a legal ban on bump stocks, citing the issue can be addressed without a ban if the ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, would do its job and reverse specific rulings that legalized these devices. Quigley said, after recounting his experience at an IN gun show where a high-powered rifle was being raffled off for $1 tickets. To my friends who won't act, sadly my Republican friends in Congress, does life mean that little to you? We could disagree about it for another decade, but whatever we do, let's make sure it will end these tragedies.

It is entirely possible that the shooting in Las Vegas could not have been prevented. She's exhausted of living in a city where she assumes everyone around her is carrying a gun.

She said her proposal has attracted Republican interest. "We live downtown. I feel less safe".

The goal now should be to keep moving forward.

Dispatch reports the Buckeye Firearms Association and Ohioans for Concealed Carry say a ban would be a threat to American gun rights. Those calls were echoed by several speakers Monday.

Founded in 1871 by two union soldiers, their original stance was against people walking around with guns, and it stayed that way until 1977.

Every time a mass shooting occurs in this country we take a few days to be shaken up by it, we offer our thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected, we argue about gun control, and then we forget it happened and move on. "That changes your mentality and it's wrong".
