Players have said repeatedly that their intent is not to be disrespectful, whether to the military or the flag, and that they are kneeling to spur conversation and hopefully change.

President Trump began attacking National Football League players who kneel during the anthem last month, setting off a firestorm.

On Sunday evening, after his team's last-minute loss to the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones told reporters that players on his team will stand for the flag, and that there will be no disrespecting of the flag. "As thousands have shown in the past, it takes brave and courage to speak and confront these issues as our players have, especially when it is unpopular with some", Smith said.

As a veteran and member of a family with an extensive number of service members, I was initially outraged by these people and their total disrespect for our country.

National anthem protests once again made headlines in the NFL Sunday, with one report suggesting NFL owners and/or team executives have made it clear to players they must stand for the anthem.

No Colts players knelt during the anthem prior to the game but the 49ers had more than 20 players kneeling with their hands over their hearts for the second straight week.

"I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen", added Trump.

Angered by Mr Trump's comments on the issue, dozens of other players have joined the protest. "He's fired. He's fired!'" he said during a speech at a rally in Alabama at the end of September.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out!"

NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem last season to protest racial inequality.

Hillary Clinton said she supports players who protest during the national anthem.
