NBC Exec With Hollywood Ties Passed on Breaking Harvey Weinstein Story

Ronan Farrow Expected to Discuss Harvey Weinstein Story on 'NBC Nightly News'

But Farrow appeared to contradict that account when asked about it on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" on Tuesday. "And immediately New Yorker recognized that, and it is not accurate to say that it was not reportable", Farrow said.

But NBC News executives have strenuously - and privately - pushed back on the narrative that they spiked the story. "Why did you end up reporting this story for The New Yorker and not for NBC News?" "In fact, there were multiple determinations at NBC that it was reportable", Farrow continued. By then, Farrow, an NBC contributor and investigative reporter, had already obtained damning audio of an encounter Weinstein had with a woman, in which Weinstein admits to having groped her, sources told HuffPost.

Tuesday night, however, on Maddow's show, Farrow said, "I walked into the door at The New Yorker with an explosive reportable piece that should have been public earlier".

"The notion that we would try to cover for a powerful person is deeply offensive to all of us", he said at an employee meeting, according to a transcript NBC made available. On at least one occasion during the course of Farrow's reporting for NBC, Weinstein's lawyers contacted NBC's news division with their concerns about what he was finding, people at the network confirmed. And he has threatened to sue the New York Times for its October 5 story detailing lurid harassment claims and eight settlements paid over many years. Sources told HuffPost that NBC had concerns related to the story's sourcing and cleared Farrow to take it to The New Yorker.

NBC was lambasted for spiking the story online, and many brought up a similar situation involving NBC a year ago.

Variety reported Farrow had been looking into allegations for Weinstein for ten months.

Farrow did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday. "These are women coming forward with a very, very hard set of stories and I really want the focus to be on them and what they did and continuing their fight".

"By several accounts, at least eight women claiming to have been sexually harassed, abused, or assaulted by Weinstein had agreed to go on camera - majority anonymously in shadow, but two alleged victims with their names and faces", according to the Beast.

Last year, NBC came in for criticism for withholding the Trump "Access Hollywood" tape until after The Post broke the story.

NBC News was aware of the footage for almost four days before the Post published it, saying they sat on it so lawyers could finish reviewing it. Multiple sources say that Farrow had convinced several victims, a lot of them former employees, to tell their stories.
