Modi to inaugurate international conference on consumer protection

The Prime Minister said, due to GST, the various indirect and hidden taxes have ceased to exist.

"Moving beyond Consumer Protection, New India will have Best Consumer Practices and Consumer Prosperity", Modi said. He said, a new business culture has been started after the GST and consumer will be most benefited.

Modi's message comes amid diplomatic efforts by the two sides to overcome the bitterness caused by the 73-day face-off between their troops in the Dokalam area of the Sikkim sector.

"New consumer protection act is being made, consumer empowerment will be major part of it and guidelines on misleading ads will be stricter", Modi said.

Since the challenges of consumer protection and consumer interest in digital transformation is very daunting, there is a need to provide high quality and affordable ICTs especially mobile and internet to empower consumers.

"GST will boost competition between companies, which will decrease prices of goods, in turn benefiting poor & middle-class consumers", PM Modi said.

At the event, PM Modi highlighted the GST law, which he said will benefit consumers in the long run as prices would come down because of competition among manufacturers. While talking about various sectoral initiatives he mentioned the, importance of good governance, Jandhan Yojna, Make in India programme, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and provision of free LPG to the poorer sections of society, technology driven PDS system and Aadhar based transparency system, etc that have protected consumer interests and how specific consumers are benefitted and their hard earned money saved.

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of State for Food C R Choudhry, and Secretary General UNCTAD Dr Mukhisa Kituyi were present in the conference. "Grahak Devo Bhava" is the dictum for consumer satisfaction. The Minister equated ISI trademark with worldwide standard.
