According to the NYS Comptroller's data, Erie County has 52 bridges that need fix - 31 in local counties, 8 in towns, and 13 in cities- coming in as the second highest after New York City.

Local governments own about half of the state's 17,000 bridges.

"Local governments are facing a big price tag for maintaining and repairing local bridges", DiNapoli said in a press release. "Hard decisions lie ahead, but these infrastructure needs must be addressed".

Although the cost estimate is very large, the report found the number of "structurally deficient" locally-owned bridges has declined in recent years.

Structurally deficient bridges are not unsafe, according to the comptroller's report.

Just under 76 percent of NYC locally owned bridges fail to meet current design standards for the amount of traffic carried.

The report looked at bridges throughout the state, and found that 86 bridges in New York City are structurally deficient, defined as safe to drive on but either having compromised load-bearing elements or are prone to flooding.

The Columbia County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution at its full board meeting in September that would allow the county to issue $2.7 million in government bonds to pay the maximum estimated cost for capital improvements to roads, bridges and solid waste systems.

He says that includes state and federal aid.

"Without enough funding to take care of them, it's not going to get better on its own, okay".

"Really what we need here is an organized approach to come up with some type of plan to address the infrastructure needs on bridges in the state", said Deyo.

The city also has the highest percentage of functionally obsolete bridges.

The Comptroller's report calls it "a major challenge for federal, state and local governments".
