However, the recent successful rescue operation of an American-Canadian family by Pakistani forces have pleased Trump and he applauded the country for its efforts.

- The U.S. and Pakistani governments have secured the release of Taliban hostages Caitlan Coleman, her husband, Joshua Boyle, and their three children born in captivity.

The family, after being released from five-year long captivity, had earlier refused to immediately board a US-bound jet over concerns about the husband's past links to a former Guantanamo Bay inmate. During this time the couple remained under the custody of the Haqqani network, and they also bore three children.

"Pak Army recovered five Western hostages including one Canadian, his United States national wife and their three children from terrorist custody", an army statement said.

USA intelligence agencies had been tracking the hostages and on Wednesday shared that the family had been moved across to Pakistan through the Kurram tribal area border, the army said.

The communiqué said that the operation by Pakistani forces, based on actionable intelligence from USA authorities, was successful.

Coleman was pregnant at the time.

US President Donald Trump said the "release of the US-Canadian family from a Taliban-linked group is a positive development for our country's relationship with Pakistan", according to a White House statement.

The United States believed the hostages were probably held by the Haqqani group in or near its headquarters in northwestern Pakistan the entire time, two other USA officials said. Canadian officials have said his kidnapping was likely unrelated to his ex-wife's family ties, and friends have said Boyle was a pacifist, raised Mennonite, who became involved with the Khadr family because of his interest in human rights issues.

Patrick Boyle said his son told him he wanted to cooperate with officials to ensure his family's captors were brought to justice "for the horrendous things they did to his wife".

Thursday's statement from the Pakistani army was the first mention of a third child. It says the rescue was made possible by intelligence provided by Washington.

The couple was kidnapped in October 2012 while on a backpacking trip that took them to Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then to Afghanistan.

The Haqqani network operates on both sides of the porous Afghan-Pakistani border but senior militants have acknowledged they moved a major base of operations to Kurram agency in the tribal areas.

They most recently appeared in a hostage video released in June this year.
