Police are investigating her death as a homicide.

Police have been unable to locate him. "Right now we are looking at several different possible scenarios as to the circumstances surrounding this", Pittsburgh Police Sgt. William Vollbergn said.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office called the death a homicide Monday and said the cause of death was "sharp/blunt trauma of the head".

University of Pittsburgh campus police are working with the city's Violent Crime Unit on the investigation.

Sonya Toler, a Pittsburgh Police spokesperson, said: "At 8:56 a.m. Sunday, October 8, Paramedics and Zone 4 Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 3500 block of Cable Place in Oakland for a report that a female was found unresponsive". Sheykhet had a restraining order against Darby, and he was arrested last month for allegedly breaking into her apartment, according to the Associated Press.

In her request for a protection order, Ms Sheykhet said Mr Darby "climbed up the gutter on the side of the house and broke through the second-floor window of my home", the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Yan was the first to see Alina dead at her apartment after he forced the door open. "I don't think I could name anyone that was like 'oh, I don't like her'". He was released after posting $10,000 bond. Her dad, exhausted of not finding a solution, in the long run broke down the entryway and saw the body, Sheykhet's sibling, Artem - who commended his 25th birthday celebration that day - told WPXI.

"She didn't answer the phone". When she moved to the Pitt main campus, she tried to end the relationship with Darby, but her father says Darby continued to chase her. She was found on the floor. The victim is an Indiana University student and claims to be Darby's ex-girlfriend.

Police in Pittsburgh are now hunting Darby, who was arrested for rape and sexual assault in March in a different county.

Counselors were available Monday for students who needed them.

Those who knew the young woman where stunned.

She won a place at the university after graduating from a high school in Pittsburgh after relocating to the USA with her family from Ivanovo, Russia.

"She was always the person that someone wanted to be around". Sheykhet was bruised and badly beaten, authorities said.
