Elizabeth City is about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, and near North Carolina's Outer Banks.

At least six people were injured during an attempted prison break at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution Thursday afternoon, officials confirm.

North Carolina officials say the Pasquotank prison has been placed on lockdown.

It wasn't immediately known how many employees were injured.

We're gathering details on an attempted escape from one correctional institution here in the east. The security fence around the facility has "a built-in electronic intrusion detection system" that "alerts armed correction officers".

Six patients involved with the incident are being treated at the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, a spokesperson told WTKR.

Schools in the area reportedly went on lockdown.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were all placed on lockdown around 3:45pm local time, according to the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools district (ESPPS).

This is a developing story. Athletic and after-school events have been canceled for Thursday. "All we know is there were multiple people injured", said the official, who declined to provide her name because she did not have permission to speak to the media. Minimum-security prisoners work outside the walls on road gangs for the county recycling department and performing other community labor.
