Seventeen large fires are raging primarily in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties, with near zero containment.

Tens of thousands of people remained out of their homes and more were evacuated Tuesday afternoon in northern Sonoma County and Napa County as the out-of-control firestorms have destroyed more than 2,000 structures and threaten many more.

"Any wind event is a concern, and September and October are our hottest months", Eliason said.

"This particular stretch of roadway was in the area of Franz Valley Rd at the onset of the fire's entrance to Sonoma County", the post read.

In Mendocino - a coastal county famed for its pristine beaches and redwoods - the fire "was random and cruel", said Alison de Grassi, a longtime resident who said she had never seen anything like it. "Our churches are just trying to figure out how to be as helpful as they can".

High-speed winds have played a role in the fires.

Also from last night, here is video of the woods burning in the Nuns Fire on Mt. Vedeer Road, on the Napa side of the ridge where the fire began early Monday.

The McClellan Reload Base, an airstrip that is used to support aerial firefighting efforts, "pumped over 266,000 gallons of fire retardant Monday".

"That's very bad", resident Nick Hinman said when a deputy sheriff warned him that the driving winds could shift the wildfires toward the town where 11,000 people live. "We're not going to be out of the woods for a great number of days to come", said fire chief Ken Pimlott. A local subdivision that housed 7,000 people was leveled by fire.

In April, the California Public Utilities Commission also fined PG&E $8.3 million for failing to maintain a power line that sparked a 22-day Butte Fire in Amador County in 2015, which destroyed 549 homes, charred 70,868 acres and killed two people.

"The historic wind event that swept across PG&E's service area late Sunday and early Monday packed hurricane-strength winds in excess of 75 miles per hour in some cases", Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said in a statement. In Santa Rosa, which saw neighborhoods and swaths of land overrun by fire, a curfew remains in effect from 6:45 p.m.to 7:15 a.m.

Wesley Carr, 23, a resident of Sebastopol in Sonoma County, said smoke from the fires had enveloped the area.

Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for northern California's wine-making Napa, Sonoma, and Yuba counties as the blazes raged unchecked and engulfed the region in thick, billowing smoke that drifted into San Francisco and Oakland.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday approved a major disaster declaration, clearing the way for federal help with the disaster, saying that "the federal government will stand with the people of California". He knew his was gone. Larson said he wished he had grabbed the gun as he left.
