The off-duty Somerville police officer involved in a New Hampshire crash with an 18-year-old who police said was racing on I-95 Sunday has died of his injuries, officials announced on Tuesday.

Remigio was taken to a hospital in New Hampshire and died the next day.

Remigio, a 30-year veteran of the Somerville Police Department, was off duty when his motorcycle was hit by a auto that witnesses said was racing other vehicles.

A hearse carries the body of Louis Remigio while police provide an escort. Friends and strangers stood on overpasses and lined the streets to pay tribute to the fallen officer.

He is scheduled to be arraigned October 20 in Rockingham County Superior Court.

New Hampshire police say Remigio was struck by a vehicle driven by Michael Ricci, 18, of Burlington, Massachusetts.

Ricci, a Burlington, Massachusetts, resident, was bailed out of a New Hampshire jail Monday afternoon on a felony reckless conduct charge.

Remigio received multiple awards and numerous commendations, the mayor and chief said.

"He was one of those people you could always go to", Crowley said.

The post said Remigio maintained the department's fleet of Harley Davidson motorcycles, and represented the department by riding in funerals and special events.

"For the rest of our careers, we're going to ensure that his memory never fades from the Somerville Police Department or the City of Somerville", Fallon said. He leaves behind two adult daughters, according to published reports. His vehicle struck Ricci's vehicle from behind following the initial collision between Ricci's and Remigio's vehicles, according to state police.
