Texas Tech officer killed at campus police headquarters, suspect in custody

Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old student accused of fatally shooting a Texas Tech University police officer at the campus police station.

A Tech official said in a statement that the incident began when campus police found evidence of drugs in a student's room during a welfare check.

Daniels was recaptured Monday evening following a foot chase near the police station.

SWAT team members are now searching for the suspected gunman, identified as freshman Hollis A. Daniels, 19.

The slain officer's identity was being withheld pending family notification.

Texas Tech has confirmed that the active shooter is a student who shot dead a police officer earlier tonight. Police are trying to establish whether the gun used by Daniels n the shooting belonged to the student or the officer.

However, gun control advocates have criticized pro-gun rights Republicans who offer thoughts and prayers but are opposed to enforcing stricter gun laws.
