Three people have been killed in a skydiving accident near Mission Beach in Queensland

Kerri Pike, the wife of former Cassowary Coast Councillor Alister Pike, was killed while taking part in a tandem skydive at Mission Beach in far north Queensland on Friday.

Police said initial investigations found one person may have collided with tandem skydivers, and their parachutes failed to deploy correctly. Researchers past year detected three tonnes of silver and 43kg of gold in effluent and sludge from wastewater treatment plants - valued at 3 million Swiss francs (S$4.15 million).

The witness said he may have seen two chutes tangled together.

"Every person in Mission Beach we have spoken to about #skydive tragedy is absolutely heartbroken Big industry, well supported by locals", reporter Daniel Bateman reported on Twitter.

Our thoughts are with the families of the two men, thought to be in their thirties, and the one woman, in her fifties, who died in the accident.

Police and other agencies remain at the scene, with representatives from The Australian Parachute Federation also sent in from Brisbane to investigate.

Three people have died in a skydiving accident at Mission Beach, south of Cairns.

'One of the deceased, a highly experienced instructor who had completed thousands of jumps, was completing a solo jump, ' they said.

There are believed to be two companies offering skydiving activities in Mission Beach, which is a 14km stretch of sand with four villages based along it. The other two were jumping as a tandem pair: "a highly experienced instructor and a customer", the statement from Skydive Australia reads.
