Trump praises Cowboys owner on National Football League protests

NFLPA's Smith: 'No player is disrespecting our country or our flag'

NFLPA's Smith: 'No player is disrespecting our country or our flag'

"Why is the National Football League getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country?"

"While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don't think it's too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem", Pence tweeted.

By "unpatriotic behavior", Gaetz is referring to the NFL players who are taking a knee or raising a fist during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and systemic racism, a movement that started when Colin Kaepernick first took a knee during the anthem previous year, shortly after the police killings of Terrence Crutcher, Alton Sterling, and Philando Castile. We look forward to continuing our talks with them on this very issue.

It's important to note that these players are not protesting the American flag or the military, or even the anthem itself; that is merely the narrative that many on the right are trying to push so that they can avoid talking about (or even acknowledging) police brutality and systemic racism.

The statement also comes a day after Vice President Mike Pence announced he was in attendance for the Indianapolis Colts game only to declare he was leaving after players on the 49ers did not stand and "disrespected the flag".

"As thousands have shown in the past, it takes bravery and courage to speak and confront these issues as our players have, especially when it is unpopular with some", Smith said in a tweet. "This is their opportunity to lead as well and will be a true test to their motto that 'Football is Family'". Trump tweeted later that he had told Pence to leave if any players kneeled. "Period", Jones said after the Cowboys' 35-31 home loss to the Green Bay Packers. "He's fired. He's fired!'" he said during a speech at a rally in Alabama at the end of September.

"We're proud of our country".

"I left today's Colts game because [POTUS] and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem", Pence wrote in a series of tweets. "He's fired! He's fired!'" A number of players followed Kaepernick's lead by taking a knee during the anthem previous year.

League critics previously called on Congress to strip the NFL of its tax exemption following a variety of controversies.
