Trump has issued a not-so-veiled threat to NBC challenging the licenses the Federal Communications Commission issues for its local broadcast stations.

President Trump on Wednesday suggested TV networks should have their broadcasting licenses challenged over "fake news" - one of his most overt threats yet to the free press.

According to the original NBC report, Trump "said he wanted what amounted to a almost tenfold increase in the US nuclear arsenal during a gathering this past summer of the nation's highest ranking national security leaders".

President Donald Trump on Wednesday floated the idea of targeting the licenses of TV networks that report "fake news" about him.

Trump's tweet could raise fears of higher government scrutiny on Comcast, although networks are not licensed by any organization.

"The President is an incredible advocate of the First Amendment", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said during an October 5 briefing.

The First Amendment is very clear.

Comcast shares are up about 8.5 percent for the year. The NBC News report reveals Tillerson's remark came just after and in response to Trump telling the Pentagon of his desires to exponentially increase the nation's nuclear capabilities.

Comcast did not immediately return a call for comment.

President Donald Trump angrily lashed out at NBC News over its report that he wanted to dramatically increase the United States' nuclear arsenal by threatening to go after the network's broadcasting license.

This isn't the first time the president has blasted NBC News' reporting.

Trump was a real-estate mogul before taking office as US president this January.
