Monkey-Pox Spreads to Akwa Ibom, One Person Quarantined

"The Federal Government has not conducted any free medical service or care in either Bayelsa or Rivers State, as alleged in the fake report being circulated".

In a statement yesterday, Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed described the news as fake and sinister.

He therefore called on Nigerians to disregard the report which, apparently, is being spread by some "unscrupulous persons to fit into a sinister" plan.

Following the outbreak of the deadly monkey poxvirus in neighboring Bayelsa state, Cross River state government has activated its disease outbreak and surveillance response team at both local and worldwide boarder communities across the state.

The Enugu State Ministry of Health has urged residents of the state to be wary of touching or coming in contact with wild animals, for self protection against Monkey-pox virus. The virus that causes monkey-pox is very old. It belongs to the same family as Chicken Pox and Smallpox.

"The EOC is now supporting state ministries of Health in their response to the outbreak through active case finding, epidemiological investigation and contact tracing".

He assured Nigerians that no effort would be spared in curtailing the spread of the disease.

Monkeypox epidemic was first recorded in Bayelsa last week. All the patients are improving clinically and there have been no deaths.

The resolution of the House was sequel to the passage of a motion by a member, Diri Douye, titled: "Suspected outbreak of monkey pox in Bayelsa State - Urgent need for free detail government intervention and worldwide community support".

"Samples have been collected from each suspected case for laboratory confirmation".

Over 50 persons were also being traced at different locations in the state following the outbreak of the disease, which had also infected a medical doctor who came in contact with the patients. Commissioner for Health Dr. Dominic Ukong, who announced the outbreak in Uyo, said the victim had been isolated. We will also provide security in these places, " he said.

He said that the ministry had also gone ahead to orientate its disease surveillance officers in all the local governments and border areas on the disease.

He's been called on to explain the measures taken by the federal government to tackle spread of the disease.

Iworiso-Markson explained that two of the index cases and the doctor affected by the disease had recovered and were discharged, adding that no death had been recorded from the disease.

The Bayelsa State chapter of NAS, in its awareness campaign, in Yenagoa metropolis, covering Kpansia market, Ekeki motor park, Opolo and Tombia roundabout, distributing hand bills which highlighted the symptoms of the disease, advised the people of the state to take seriously washing of therir hands, as well as it remained the best way to avoid contracting the disease.
