Wine country wildfires create hazardous air conditions for Bay Area residents

Health advisory and Spare the Air alerts in effect for Bay Area (update)

Health advisory and Spare the Air alerts in effect for Bay Area (update)

The district issued a smoke advisory yesterday (Oct. 10) because of the wildfires, which have burned tens of thousands of acres, and later in the day issued a health advisory and Spare the Air alert.

Continuing wind and wildfires today may cause residents to experience trouble breathing, coughing, headaches and chest pain.

"We're seeing the worst air quality ever recorded in many parts of the Bay Area". "PM2.5 is so small, about 1/30 the width of a human hair, that it can penetrate deep into the lungs".

Tiny particles in smoke is causing unhealthy air quality through the region, although shifting wind velocities and directions can cause the soot concentrations to change quickly and vary from place to place, the Bay Air Quality Management District said Tuesday morning.

San Francisco officials said that hospitals have already started receiving patients for respiratory issues that are likely related to the smoke from the wildfires, San Francisco Chronicle reported. Outside of the active fire areas, air quality will be variable and unpredictable. The smoke in the air is due to a series of wildfires in Northern California. Fresno Unified has also canceled all outdoor activities.

Because of the serious air quality conditions we are asking residents to avoid adding additional air pollution activities such as wood burning, lawn mowing, leaf blowing, driving, and barbecuing.

The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) will also perform wellness checks throughout San Francisco and providing transportation (upon request) to shelters.

Individuals most at risk for illness due to smoke in the air include children, seniors and those with respiratory problems.

Wildfire smoke can be risky to our health and even those who are healthy can get sick if there is enough smoke in the air.
