LORD OF THE RINGS and HITMAN Series Coming to TV

Last week we heard rumours that Amazon Studios was working on a Lord of the Rings TV show, yet today we've learnt that it's officially happening.

However, fans anxious that the TV show will attempt to retell the story need not be concerned; the series will instead "explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring", and will therefore be set before the events from the Oscar-winning trilogy.

Move over, Game of Thrones.

Prior to the acquisition of rights by Amazon, the Lord of the Rings novels were first adapted into a film series released from 2001 to 2003.

Amazon Studios will produce the Amazon Prime original series in conjunction with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a production division of Warner Bros. Given the success of the film trilogy, experts are quite skeptical about how Amazon will execute its Lord of the Rings TV series.

Amazon announced the deal after reaching an agreement with Tolkien's estate, which issued its own statement. "Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings". The distribution juggernaut paid close to $250 million just to acquire the rights to the show-that's before any production costs at all, including talent, equipment, development, and production.

Yguado added that it would be an honor to work with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on the upcoming project and Amazon Studios is excited to take fans of the epic fantasy franchise on a new journey in Middle Earth.

Amazon is no stranger to big spending on film and TV.
