Crediting Narendra Modi for overcoming huge odds and becoming the leader of the country, Rai said that Modi had become the prime minister of the country after facing a childhood that was filled with poverty and hardship.

"What I had uttered and what appeared in some newspapers are not the same.it was a mischievous misinterpretation of what was said at a function in Patna on Monday". He also said he regretted hurting people's sentiments. "It has been twisted out of context", Rai added.

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and ministers Nand Kishore Yadav, Mangal Pandey and Suresh Sharma were present at the meeting, organised to honour late Banshi Sah alias Banshi Chacha, a prominent freedom fighter.

"It shows the extremist mindset of the BJP leader and the party should immediately take action against him, " the opposition leader said.

Rabri also said she and her family members would not respond to calls from CBI and ED and added that the agencies should visit her residence if they want to quiz her in connection with the land-for-hotel case.

Meanwhile, the opposition RJD and Congress attacked Rai for his alleged comments. "The Centre should give an answer and so should the state government", she said while addressing the Rashtriya Janata Dal's national council here.

Earlier, another BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu had issued a bounty of Rs 10 crore on the heads of actor Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali in connection with the controversy around the movie Padmavati. He said there were growing voices of protest against the three-and-a-half-year-old central government led by Modi.

Loose translation: "Chopping-off hands, breaking fingers are proverbs in Hindi which are used to intimidate your opponents".

Senior Congress leader Prem Chandra Mishra said, "As the state unit chief of a party and MP, he should realise that we are living in a democratic setup wherein such type of language is unacceptable".
