Can't say there is no 'Hindu terrorism': Kamal Haasan

Writing in a Tamil magazine, Kamal said that earlier right-wing Hindus used to argue, but did so without indulging in violence. "But now they resort to violence", Mr Haasan said. Haasan said the right-wing groups which once relied on polemic to drive their rivals to aggression, have abandoned the old unsuccessful strategy and surrendered themselves to belligerence.

Haasan further writes, "The right-wing groups can not challenge talk of Hindu terrorism because terror has spread in their camps as well".

Veteran Tamil actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday said Hindu right wing groups can not anymore claim that there are no "Hindu terrorists", as they resort to violence instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue. "Such terror activities are not going to help them in any way".

Haasan's provocative statements came at a time when his fans and the leaders in Tamil Nadu are waiting for a "grand announcement" the actor is expected to make on November 7, when he turns 63.

His comments evoked angry reactions from RSS supporters. The column was followed by what appears to be an excerpt of the actor's conversation with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Kamal wrote, "There is no possibility that the attempt by fascists to shift the world towards the right will succeed". He had added that those who want to do something for Tamil Nadu as a "duty" and not as a "sacrifice" are welcome to join him.

Sounding philosophical at one point, Haasan said "change is unchangeable".

Meanwhile, the BJP has condemned the actor's remarks and sought an apology from him. "In reality, there is peace because Hindus are in a majority", BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathi said. "The Congress which talked of Hindu terrorism is today out of power", referring to the political backlash the Congress faced for using the phrase.
