Air traffic controller charged with having weapon of mass destruction in Charlotte: reports

An air traffic controller in Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested Friday on weapon of mass destruction (WMD) charges, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced. "He did not have access to any aircraft at the airport", the airport stated.

The Federal Aviation Administration immediately fired Dandan after his arrest and revoked his access to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Paul George Dandan, 30, the FAA worker from Charlotte, was jailed on $45,000 bail. The FBI said they are assisting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police with the investigation, though they don't expect federal charges to be filed.

Around 10:30 a.m. on November 3, police officers responded to a 911 call about someone housing a homemade explosive, later determined to be a homemade pipe bomb. When the officers arrived, they found a homemade pipe bomb, the local media reported.

During the investigation, police determined that Fells had made the device.

"The FAA has terminated the employee's access to the facility and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities", FAA officials said in a news release. WNCN reports that the FAA has suspended Dandan's access to the airport while the FAA and the FBI are investigating the case.

MCSOThe other arrested man has been named as Derrick Fells. Fells decided not use the Pipe Bomb and instead gave the pipe bomb to Dandon, an acquaintance. who works for the FAA.

Paul Dandan, 30, has been charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.

Fells was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction and three counts of manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction.
