Chidambaram on GST rates cuts

He had said, "Congress is vindicated".

He said the "shower of changes" to the GST was made possible only because of the Gujarat assembly elections. Your elections did what Parliament and common sense could not do ...

"The Government should announce that GST rates will be capped at 18 per cent at one go, instead of convening the GST Council every now and then reducing the tax rates", Stalin said in the statement.

"Hinting that the BJP government has timed the GST rate review with an eye on next month's crucial elections in Gujarat where small traders are upset over the new tax, Chidambaram said ".Your (Gujarat) elections did what Parliament and common sense could not do".

Crediting his party the Congress for pushing for GST Rate cut, Chidambaram said "Congress is vindicated".

The decision was taken during the 23rd GST Council meeting in presence of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, deputy CMs, finance ministers of the states held at Hotel Radison Blue in Guwahati.

On the other hand, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, the Assam government has chose to introduce a chapter of GST in the textbooks of higher secondary level.

Gandhinagar: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented with the agreement of all political parties and is making changes based on the needs, adding the Congress Party is trying to interpret the fact, reports ANI.

The former Finance Minister, whose party has sharply attacked the Modi government over the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, seemed to be suggesting that the Centre carried out the GST revision in order to further the Bharatiya Janata Party's chances in poll-bound Gujarat.

Apart from it, the GST Council also reduced the tax rate on several items from 18 per cent to 12 per cent.

Soon after the GST Council had made a decision to reduce rates for 178 mass consumption items, Chidambaram had taken to Twitter to announce that his party stood vindicated. "This is typical of the Congress's pettiness and pusillanimity".
