Three properties belonging to fugitive underworld don and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim were auctioned on Tuesday for approximately Rs 11.06 crore.

This was the second Dawood property auction the Ministry of Finance - under which SAFEMA functions - had organized in the past two years and it was announced in public advertisements issued in mid-October. "SBUT bid the highest and won the auction by collectively bidding Rs 11.58 crore for all the three properties", the source added. "The trust won the auction for Shabnam Guest House, six flats in Damarwala building and a restaurant Rounaq Afroz", a SBUT spokesperson said. Shabnam Guesthouse, a double-storey structure on Yakub street, was occupied by Dawood's younger siblings Haseena and Iqbal. These buildings are dilapidated and unfit for living. Dawood's mother Aminabi used to stay at Damarwala building even after he and his brothers fled the country. The reserve price for Damarwala Building was set at Rs 1.56 crore, for Hotel Raunak Afroz at Rs 1.19 crore and for Shabnam Guest House, it was Rs 1.22 crpre. Hotel Raunak Afroz, initially belonged to Haji Mastan.

The Trust was established by the Late Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (RA) to undertake the redevelopment of one of India's most vibrant but congested locality popularly known as "Bhendi Bazaar".

The properties were seized since 1993 serial blasts accused Dawood is still wanted. As a precautionary measure, officials of Mumbai police and several other agencies kept tab on the proceedings in and around the venue, which was situated near Churchgate station.

Meanwhile, security was a concern for both the organisers and the bidders. A total of six properties were put up for auction but only three belonged to Dawood. The officials who auctioned the properties said they had kept stringent clauses this time so that bidders who can not pay up later do not enter the bid. "Therefore to ensure the safety of the families living in these buildings and to carry on with the redevelopment project, we participated in the bidding and acquired these properties".
