Democratic Strategist Calls for Al Franken to Resign

Franken has rebuffed calls to leave office, instead agreeing to an ethics investigation in the Senate amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Adding that she was "torn by competing impulses", Goldberg said she was "partly persuaded" by the argument that liberals shouldn't condemn men accused of sexual harassment when those men supported the party line on women's rights.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday showed that 49% of Democratic registered voters said the Minnesota senator should resign, just 1% point below the 50% of registered voters overall who said Franken should resign.

When asked if Franken will be effective if he stays in office, 32 percent of those polled said he would be, while 37 percent said he would not be effective and 32 percent said they were not sure.

Franken's approval rating also dropped from 53 percent to 36 percent.

That same proportion, 22 per cent, are standing behind Franken in a SurveyUSA poll of Minnesotans conducted for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis.

Franken has said that he does not plan to resign, although he has not made any public appearances for almost a week. The poll surveyed 600 Minnesotans and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent.

Lindsay Menz, 33, told CNN on Monday that Franken groped her in 2010 after she asked to take a picture with him at the Minnesota State Fair.

Previously, Los Angeles radio host Leeann Tweeden accused Franken of forcibly kissing her and groping her during a USO tour in 2006, before the then-comedian was elected to the Senate.
