Disney Confirms New "Star Wars" Trilogy With Rian Johnson

New "Star Wars" characters, trilogy in development

"As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud", a Friday, Nov. 10 news release reads.

Since acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney has upped the focus on the money-generating Star Wars franchise. and it looks like that's not stopping anytime soon.

Having hired The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to helm the new saga, Disney is optimistic of what Johnson is capable of and are happy to bless him with a clean slate saying, "We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi".

Ms Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement: "Rian will do unbelievable things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy".

Johnson will be joined by producer, and a longtime collaborator of his, in Ram Bergman in crafting the new trilogy of new characters.

Johnson's new trilogy will be separate from this series. In addition to the new film trilogy, Disney's CEO Bob Iger said during the company's quarterly earnings call on Thursday that a "Star Wars" live-action TV series was also being developed for the company's upcoming streaming service. "But man now I REALLY hope you like The Last Jedi". He will write and direct the first movie in the new trilogy, which Lucasfilm has not announced a timeline for. After the news that we will not be running out of Star Wars content-or fresh merchandise-to consume, Disney's stock popped back up, hitting above its closing price at about $104, at the time of publishing.

"The Last Jedi", which follows on from 2015's hit film "The Force Awakens" and is expected to focus on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), will be in theaters on December 15.
