Donald Trump asks Chinese president to help LiAngelo Ball, UCLA trio following arrest

President Trump personally asked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for help in dealing with the three UCLA basketball players arrested for shoplifting in China, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

LiAngelo Ball and Bruins teammates Jalen Hill and Cody Riley were apprehended and questioned last week about allegedly stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton shop near the team's hotel in Hangzhou.

The three players remain in China and could be required to stay there for the next couple of weeks.

The Post reports that Xi promised Trump that he'd look into the shoplifting situation and ensure the Bruins are treated fairly by the Chinese criminal justice system.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed in an email that Trump spoke to Xi regarding the matter.

As reported earlier by The Root, the players did not play in the game they came to China for against Georgia Tech in Shanghai, nor did they fly home with the team.

Ball, Riley and Hill were taken to the police station in Hangzhou, where they were kept for a number of hours, according to ESPN.

Three UCLA basketball players were arrested November 7 in Hangzhou, China, on suspicion of shoplifting.

The case is almost a conclusion and indications are that charges against the three players will be reduced.

Ball, 18, is the younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball and the son of Big Baller Brand entrepreneur LaVar Ball.

UCLA returned to the United States on Saturday without the three freshmen, sources told Markazi.
