Dramatic moment hero airport worker grabs smoking backpack as it EXPLODED in busy airport

The lithium-ion battery inside a passenger's backpack was mistaken for a bomb when it began smoking and making a popping noise at about 5 p.m. Friday evening.

Investigators originally thought there was an improvised explosive device in the bag, but it later turned out to be an exploding battery in a passenger's backpack.

On the surveillance video you can see agent Perez grab the smoking bag as passengers frantically scatter throughout the terminal.

"Our TSA Team's performance was outstanding".

This monumental task was accomplished in close coordination of the TSA, Orlando Police Department, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Perez said he joined the TSA, an agency within the US Department of Homeland Security, after the September 11 attacks.

But the thousands of holidaymakers inside the busy airport were none the wiser and it caused panic and fear.

Running, despite pages going out over the loud speaker.

New footage from the Orlando International Airport shows what happened during a scary incident that led to flight cancelations, delays and an evacuation of the airport.

Because everyone who evacuated the terminal had to go through security screening again, travelers were experiencing inordinately long lines.

She had just gone through the security checkpoint and was preparing to get onto a flight home to MI when the chaos hit.

Hours after the battery explosion, massive crowds were still working their way through security to get to their flights.

Brown said the airport is looking at technology to improve the way it communicates in an emergency, including using the fire alarm speakers and quickly utilizing electronic billboards to send a message.
