Duterte on meeting with Trump: We did not talk about EJK

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte says he stabbed someone to death 'over a look' when he was 16

"Do not worry.' But as Chairman, I made it a tunnel for the communications to be active", Duterte said.

Duterte then said he sensed good rapport with "an animated President-elect Trump" who understood the way the country is handling the anti-drug campaign.

With Duterte set to host world leaders in Manila on Sunday, human rights groups are concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump and Asian leaders appear unlikely to criticize his violent rule. "I had to thank Mr. Xi Jinping for the timely and crucial help that he extended to our country when we were fighting the siege of Marawi", he said.

Duterte says there are three million drug addicts in the Philippines, and he'd like them all dead. "I have stated before and I was not lying, I would not entertain talks about military or anything", he said.

"I'm a very good mediator and arbitrator", Trump said during a news conference with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang in Hanoi before flying here. "It has nothing to do with sovereignty", he also said.

The Chinese leader, however, would not back down on Beijing's territorial claim, Duterte said and justified his decision not to immediately demand Chinese compliance with a ruling by a United Nations-linked tribunal that invalidated China's sweeping claims in the South China Sea on historical grounds.

Duterte seemed confident he had Trump's backing for his deadly war on drugs.

Despite activists having long criticised the U.S. for what they see as an unrelenting American control over the Philippines, Duterte changed his stance toward the USA after Trump's inauguration a year ago.

"There are a range of issues that I could bring up with him, and I may bring [the killings] up with him if I have the opportunity, but there is no formal meeting with him", he told reporters Saturday.

The comments came as the leader defended his government's brutal countrywide crackdown on drugs.

"He said something about, 'You know, you handle it very well, '" Duterte said, quoting Trump.

The 71-year-old has rarely taken kindly to criticism of his drug war.

But Trudeau has said trade deals are about much more than lowering tariffs, he also wants to see "progressive" elements, and a commitment to human rights from potential partners - which is what makes the wave of questionable killings in the Philippines, one of ASEAN's largest members, so potentially problematic for Canada.
