EA Buys Titanfall And Its Developer, Respawn; New Titanfall Game Coming

Electronic Arts Inc. announced Thursday that it will acquire Respawn Entertainment, a videogame studio known for the "Titanfall" series of games.

EA said in a press release that the deal is worth $US455 ($592) million, a number that includes cash, equity, and performance milestone payments. That changes today, as EA has announced it has acquired the California-based developer and the Titanfall IP along with it. Respawn and EA launched Titanfall 2 in late 2016, with a new single-player campaign and expanded multiplayer gameplay, resulting in one of the year's top-rated shooters. There are multiple projects in the works, including a brand new Titanfall title, a game set in the Star Wars universe, and a VR gaming experience.

Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella will stay with the studio and noted that the acquisition ensures that EA Games will continue to "bring the resources and support we [ed: the studio] need for long term success, while still keeping our culture and creative freedom". EA has been a great partner over the years with Titanfall and Titanfall 2, and we're excited to combine our strengths. "For fans, my message is we are still Respawn and we are going to make things better", said Zampella.

We have worked together a long time from the inception of the studio. We've been talking closely with the leadership at EA and we share their values and vision for the future of being a developer-focused company that puts the players first. The question was, where we are in the industry, how do we take the next step in making bigger, better games. This announcement comes only weeks after EA revealed that it would close down Visceral Games and transfer the development of its Star Wars project to another team. The first game, Titanfall, was published by EA in 2014, and received global recognition with more than 75 top awards.
