The world's largest lithium ion battery has been installed ahead of a 100-day deadline set by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The deadline was December 1, but local news is now reporting that the installation is completed and that they are now testing the system before Electranet brings it online.

Tesla and Neoen, the wind power company operating the wind farm at the project, gave themselves 100 days to complete the project after having signed the interconnection agreement with Electranet, which was approved by the utility authority at the end of September.

"While others are just talking, we are delivering our energy plan, making South Australia more self-sufficient, and providing backup power and more affordable energy for South Australians this summer", Weatherill said in today's statement.

The project first made headlines in July after Musk said that his team could install a large scale energy storage solution within 100 days of signing a grid connection agreement or the entire system would be free. It's unclear whether Musk's wager guaranteed a complete working system.

Musk's Powerpack is created to "stabilise the South Australian grid" by providing enough power to supply tens of thousands of homes.

The 100 megawattt/129 MWh system is created to reduce intermittency issues and manage increased demand during summer peak loading periods, potentially providing enough energy to power 30,000 homes for eight hours, or 60,000 homes for four hours.

Under regular system loads, the lithium ion battery will be recharged with power from the nearby Hornsdal windfarm, which operators will then have part access to. Last year, storm damage to South Australia's electrical grid caused a cascade of failures, leading to a massive blackout that left 1.7 million residents without power for as long as two weeks.

"To have this done in two months... you can't remodel your kitchen in that period of time", Musk said.
