Government Vows Quick Response to Kermanshah Earthquake

Rescue operations have ended in Iran after a powerful natural disaster killed more than 500 people and injured 8-thousand others.

The report Tuesday afternoon by the IRNA news agency said the number of injured in the temblor now stood at 7,460. In the more sparsely populated areas across the border in Iraq, 10 people died and several hundred were injured.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei sent a message for all citizens to "rush to the aid of those affected in these early hours after the incident".

The worst damage appeared to be in the Kurdish town of Sarpol-e-Zahab in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.

"What we need is a tent and covers to be able to get through the night", said 24-year-old mother Shima Maryami Kiani. "We have no tents, no blankets", said one young resident of Sar-e Pol-e Zahab, the city most affected by the disaster.

Iran has experienced at least two major quake disasters since - one in 2005 that killed more than 600 people and another in 2012 that left some 300 dead.

Competing in the men's 85-kilogram weight category, Rostami became the first Iranian to take home gold in the 2016 Olympics, lifting a world record 396 kilograms from the ground to his shoulders, regaining his strength and composure before hoisting it above his head.

About 30 Red Crescent teams are working in the natural disaster zone, Irna reported.

Tremors were felt as far away as Turkey, Israel and Kuwait.

On Tuesday, Iran marked a day of mourning, with a black banner adorning the corner of images of the disaster broadcast by state television.
